Nick won Paasisavut 2023: It was an adventure!

Now he urges his fellow researchers to apply for this year’s Paasisavut, where PhDs compete to communicate their research to the Greenlandic public.

When Nick Duelund signed up last year for the Greenlandic research communication competition, Paasisavut, he didn’t expect a huge buzz about his research. But the attention the competition created was incredible, the researcher says.

“Suddenly, people knew what we were doing and what kind of research we were conducting in Greenland. It was amazing!” says Nick Duelund, who won Paasisavut 2023 with his presentation on his PhD project about vision problems in Greenlandic children.

Paasisavut is a competition for PhD students and PhD holders who are researching topics related to Greenland.  At a big live show on November 13, 2024, researchers will compete to communicate their research to the Greenlandic public. The show will take place  in Katuaq in Nuuk and will be broadcast live on KNR. The winner is the one who can explain their PhD project in a way that everyone can understand.

“If you are passionate about your research and ready to take it to the next level, please hurry up and apply for Paasisavut 2024.”

– Nick Duelund, PhD, winner of Paasisavut 2023

The winner will be the one who can present their research in a way that everyone understands. KNR—the Greenlandic Broadcast Corporation—will broadcast the show, and the winner will receive a prize.

Take your research to the next level

The five selected Paasisavut finalists undergo a thorough coaching process with a professional research communicator and an actor, where they learn how to communicate their PhD project in the best possible way.

“Paasisavut taught me one crucial thing: your research doesn’t end when you have your results. Disseminating back to the public is just as important. And doing it through Paasisavut was an adventure in itself because the coaching we received prior to the show was phenomenal,” says Nick Duelund.

The application deadline to become a finalist in Paasisavut is 1 September 2024. And Nick Duelund has an important piece of advice for everyone considering applying:

“If you are passionate about your research and ready to take it to the next level, please hurry up and apply for Paasisavut 2024.”

PhD students and PhD holders from all over the world who have submitted their thesis within the last two years can apply for Paasisavut as long as the PhD project is directly related to Greenland and significant parts of the research are conducted in the country.
